Nathaniel Price’s journey from a creative household in Brixton to becoming an acclaimed writer and producer is a story of passion, resilience, and storytelling with heart. I spoke with Nathaniel about his work on the critically acclaimed adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s Mr Loverman and his broader career.

Nathaniel reflected on the collaborative nature of TV production… “You could be really set on a particular idea initially. And then when it actually comes into production, whether it’s large or small, that can change for various reasons… As a creative, you have to get creative with changes. And it actually affords you opportunity to story in a slightly different way.”

He described the pressure and responsibility of adapting Mr Loverman “The main challenge really was like not letting down the thousands upon thousands of people who adored the book. And I was one of them, you know, and you want to do justice to it… I like that element of pressure in a way, because it means something to you. And it’s important.”

On balancing source material and creativity “For Noughts and Crosses, you have to be true to the vision that’s been set for that show and to Malorie’s feeling of the book… With The Outlaws, there’s a remit you work to, but you find things that your strengths can bring to it.”

Nathaniel’s passion lies in stories about people on the periphery… “I’m drawn a lot to anti-heroes… There’s a strong sense of identity. Who am I? And there’s something always kind of getting in the way of that kind of person, sort of breaking free… People are very rarely one end of the spectrum, really all bad or all good. There’s a lot of black and white there.”

His writing process starts with character “It always starts with character. Who are these people, what do they want and what’s standing in their way. Then you construct the plot and story beats. It’s always piling on the pressure, not allowing them off too easily.”

Nathaniel shared how an injury shifted his focus from football to writing “I got injured playing football and I went back to writing as kind of a therapy for me… I discovered scripts and it was just like a beautiful format that I fell in love with… I started to tell stories about people from my neighbourhood.”

Looking ahead, Nathaniel is excited about new projects “I’m working on a few crime shows… I would really love to do another huge unapologetic love story, kind of in the vein of Remains of the Day or The End of the Affair… One of my favourite films is Brief Encounter. So if I could do anything like that, that would be amazing.”
