Liverpool Native Jake Harper Opens Up About Finding Success Through Authenticity
In the crowded world of social media, standing out requires something special. For Jake Harper, a marketing graduate from Liverpool, that something special wasn’t carefully calculated strategy—it was simply being himself.
“I started making content when I was on placement from uni,” explains Harper. “I was in a new city, doing a new job… I just turned to TikTok to document that and share my experience with other people.”
What began as a casual hobby during his university placement has transformed into a thriving creative outlet that occupies “98% of his brain.” Jake’s authentic voice and relatable content have struck a chord with thousands, particularly among students and recent graduates navigating life’s uncertainties.
Regional Accent: A Connection Point
Jake’s distinctive Liverpool accent has become one of his most recognisable traits—and possibly a key to his success.
“When you hear someone with an accent that sounds similar to yours, it starts that connection,” Harper reflects. “Living and working in London, I am one of very few people in my work that has a regional accent or is from the North.”
This point of difference has helped him build genuine connections with viewers who recognise something familiar in his voice and perspective.
Viral Success Through Vulnerability
While Harper creates diverse content, it was his honest reflection on post-university life that truly resonated with audiences.
“It’s something that I thought, and I still do think, isn’t really spoken about enough—that time between finishing uni and starting work, or just that kind of tail end of adolescence,” he shares.
Advice for Aspiring Creators
For those hesitant to start creating content, Jake’s advice is refreshingly straightforward:
“I would just say do it. If you just pick up and film today, you just don’t know what that’s going to turn into in a couple of months or in a year.”
He acknowledges the natural concerns many feel about putting themselves online: “What will people in my real life think? Or what if someone I went to school with sees this?”… “You just have to put it to the back of your head and just not care.”
Beyond Social Media
Despite his online success, Jake maintains a grounded perspective about what truly matters. When asked what he hopes his future self might tell him, his focus isn’t on follower counts or brand deals.
“I hope that they would say I’m carrying on doing things that I’m enjoying… I hope I’m still enjoying work and enjoying life wherever I’m living. And I’ve still got my relationships and friendships with people.”
