West End star James Darch is currently wowing audiences as Christian in the highly anticipated musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada at London’s Dominion Theatre. In a recent interview with Queerly’s Stage and Screen podcast, Darch shared fascinating insights into his role, the show’s stunning wardrobe, and the surreal experience of auditioning for music legend Elton John.
Describing his character Christian, Darch reveals, “I would describe Christian as maybe the forbidden fruit, the enticing exciting slightly naughtier side of the fashion industry that she [Andy] possibly gets herself a little bit wrapped up in.” He emphasises that Christian isn’t a villain, but rather an ambitious, career-focused individual who believes he can help Andy advance in her career.
One of the most thrilling aspects of Darch’s journey to landing the role was the opportunity to sing for Elton John himself. “I remember… getting the email from my agent saying, ‘Hello, can you just send some videos of you singing to Elton John?'” Darch recalls. “You’re suddenly going, ‘This is my life.” The actor humorously describes the challenge of choosing the right Elton John song to perform, wanting to avoid “murdering” one of the icon’s most famous hits.
The Devil Wears Prada Musical doesn’t disappoint when it comes to fashion. Darch gushes about the show’s incredible wardrobe, designed by the multi-award-winning Greg Barnes. “I dread to think what the budget on this show is, but we’re into the millions of pounds just for costume,” he reveals. Darch particularly loves his Edward Sexton double-breasted navy suit, which he says helps him embody the character: “When I put it on, it makes my job so easy because it makes me stand in a certain way… I kind of enter that character just by whacking on that suit.”
Darch’s enthusiasm for the production is palpable. He describes the show as “a proper feel-good escapism show” with a “really, really funny” script that incorporates many of the film’s iconic lines. He urges potential audience members to book their tickets soon, as many performances are already selling out.
