Jack Tracy’s Danny Will Die Alone has carved out a unique space in queer storytelling by pulling back the curtain on the messy, hilarious, and often frustrating world of gay dating in New York City. Now in its third and final season on OUTflix, the show blends sharp humor with raw honesty, drawing heavily from Jack’s own post-pandemic experiences. In this candid conversation, Jack shares how the series evolved from a DIY web project into a beloved streaming hit, why he chose to shake up the narrative structure, and what it means to bring Danny’s story to a close, all while juggling music releases and new creative ventures.

Q: How do you decide if you’ve gone far enough or too far with the show’s content?

Jack Tracy: I think whether I’ve gone far enough or too far is up to the viewer, not up to me. They’ll decide whether it’s too far or not. My guiding post is just, does it make me laugh? If I laugh, then I think someone else will as well.

Q: The show started as a web series and has grown into a full series on platforms like Outflix. What surprised you most about that journey?

Jack: It’s completely shocking. Never in a million years when I started the web series did I think we’d end up here. I originally sent it to Deku, the production behind Danny, thinking they’d license the web series for a couple bucks and that would be it. But they loved it and wanted to invest and turn it into something bigger. Now I’m on Instagram talking to fans every day, and there’s even a Danny fan account. It’s been wild and very appreciated.

Q: Season 3 splits focus between Danny and Matty’s perspectives. What made you decide to give Matty his own narrative arc?

Jack: Matty was invented in season two because the production wanted a continuing storyline, so we needed another main character. Season one was just little dates, season two had a continuing storyline with Danny talking to camera, and by the end of season two, Matty was aware of the fourth wall break too. For season three, I wanted to shake things up by having both of them talk to camera, adding a fresh twist.

Q: Since the show is based on your own post-pandemic dating experiences, how do you decide what makes it into the episodes?

Jack: The uneventful stuff stays private—nice guys, normal conversations. The people who make it into the show don’t realize how wild they’re being. You really have to do something crazy to get in. It’s totally up to how the person behaves across the table.

Q: What do you think queer audiences are craving that other dating shows aren’t delivering?

Jack: Queer dating shows tend to romanticize and fantasize the experience. Danny tries to be as realistic as possible, warts and all. The people are normal guys you’d actually meet on dating apps—not all ripped or perfect. By talking to camera, we share the internal frustrations that many relate to. That realness is what makes us unique.

Q: This is the final season. Can you tease how you decided to wrap things up?

Jack: We had to answer the question in the title: Will Danny die alone? I always know my first and last scene before writing. I had to decide on a happy or sad ending. Fans who’ve seen it seem happy with how it ended, even if it wasn’t what they expected. I don’t let fan expectations sway me, I do what I think is best creatively.

Q: You’re releasing your album Glorify alongside this season and crowdfunding another project. How does it feel to close this chapter?

Jack: We shot the first episode in 2021, so five years of my life have been devoted to Danny. It’s bittersweet. There could have been more stories, and fans keep asking for more seasons. But this feels like a huge stepping stone in my career—from YouTube to OnlyFans to a streaming platform. I’m excited about what’s next.

Q: You write original songs for the end credits, calling it the “RuPaul approach.” How do your music and storytelling relate?

Jack: I consider them separate. I don’t write music just for the show. I’m a musician who performs at pride festivals and makes music videos. When it comes to the show, I pick songs that match the episode’s theme. Glorify was released earlier this year, and I’m working on new music for next year.

Q: You crowdfunded this season in under 24 hours. What does that kind of support mean to you?

Jack: It’s shocking and always surprises me. Sometimes you have no idea if your work is resonating. When I asked for help with the budget and got twice what I asked for in 24 hours, it was incredible. I still get messages from fans who’ve been with me since 2016. I couldn’t have asked for more and hope they come with me on future projects.
