In the latest episode of Queerly’s Stage and Screen Podcast, host Harvey Morton sits down with award-winning film blogger and critic Adam Brannon. The conversation delves into the current state of cinema, upcoming releases, Adam’s impressive Jurassic Park memorabilia collection, and his journey as a movie blogger.
Adam shares his insights on the trends shaping the film industry in 2024. He notes that it’s been a “really divisive year” with both huge successes and massive flops. The industry is still grappling with the aftermath of the pandemic and the growing influence of streaming services.
“I think cinema is still recovering from the pandemic,” Adam explains. “And I think things like Netflix, Prime and Disney+ are having a really big impact on people going to the cinema.”
He highlights the success of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ as potentially the biggest film of the year but points out that even successful films are having shorter theatrical runs due to quick transitions to streaming platforms.
Adam also highlighted the importance of having hobbies to improve your mental health with his love for Jurassic Park going beyond mere fandom. His office is filled with memorabilia and collectibles. He shares how his collection grew, especially during the lockdown:
“I already had a few little bits from when I was a kid and then I think it kind of exploded a little bit in lockdown because I was bored, really struggled with my mental health as everybody did in lockdown and I thought I’m going to spend some of the money I can’t spend on anything else on decking out my office and that’s what I did.”
Adam’s blog, Movie Metropolis, began as a way to keep his writing skills sharp after graduating from university. What started as a personal project has since grown into one of the UK’s top movie blogs.
